Thunderstorms move through area after steamy day - Chicago .

Severe thunderstorms passed through the Chicago area this evening, dumping more than an edge of rain at Midway Airport in only 15 minutes as wind gusts were clocked at 54 mph.

Severe thunderstorm warnings for several northeastern Illinois counties including parts of Cook, DuPage, eastern and northern Kankakee counties that were to survive until 7:15 p.m.

were cancelled just before 7 as storms moved through the area.

Another warning issued for southwestern Dupage, southern Kane, Will, Kendall, and northern Grundy counties was off at 6:34 p.m. after the storms moved out of the area.

But the quick-moving storms did some damage, and a terrible thunderstorm watch issued formost ofnorthern Illinoisthat was to be until 9 p.m. has been cancelled. The storms tonight cooled temperatures and while Saturday may see some thunderstorms, temperatures will simply get into the upper 80s-an advance from today.

At some points today, the heat index reaching 110 in some places today.

A heat advisoryexpired at7 p.m.for northern Illinois, and remained in force until 8 p.m. for central and southern partsof the state.The daysaw anunofficial high of94 degrees at O'Hare at 4 p.m.5 degrees shy of the 1914 record of 99-with a heat index of 104. The highest temperature in the metropolis for the day was 95 degrees at Center and 95 degrees at North Island, which registered a heat index of 107.

Starting around6 p.m. p.m. there were dramatic dropoffs in temperature, with temperatures at O'Hare and Midway airports dropping into the upper 70s, and high winds caused some damage in outlying suburbs. At 6:11, Midway Airport clocked wind gustsof 54 mph. In Romeoville, where the National Weather Service recorded 47 mph winds, emergency officials reported damage to roofs of homes near 127th Street and Reagan Road. There was widespread damage reported across Kankakee County, according to the Weather Service.
